Πρόγνωση καιρού Σάμου - Samos Weather

Πυθαγόρας ο Σάμιος - Pythagoras of Samos

"The ancients called Samos 'Isle of the Blessed'. Tiny terracotta-roofed villages, sweet smelling forests carpeted in wild flowers, endless beatches; it's easy to see why."

Samos is one of the most fortunate of the Greek islands with it's variety of natural beauties (Samos Potami), its long and rich history and it's lively economy. The natural attractions of Samos do not stop at a few picturesque old ports or fine beaches which, although Samos has them, can be found elsewhere in Greece too. Samos also has rugged mountain scenery to offer the visitor, and peaceful, fertile plains. It is a continuation of the neighbouring coast of Asia Minor, to which it was joined until earthquakes brought about a separation.

Even in ancient times, the island's position, the fertility of its soil and the industry of its inhabitans caused it to flourish. The events of this period can be traced in Samiot tradition as well as in history and in the marvellous remains which are still to be seen. This is an island which lives its traditions, and they are to be felt in every step one takes there, and in every meeting with the courteous and hard-working people of the island.

In recent years, the backage tour industry has "discovered" Samos, and tourism is beginning to impose the demands and customs of a more cosmopolitan way of life. However, the island has managed to retain a number of independently profitable sectors of economic activity (notably wine-making olive protection).

Your Guide To Samos Follows:

Where To Go:

Swimmers and Sunners There are swimmable beaches almost everywhere on Samos. Kokkari is set on a spectangular broad pebble beach and pretty shingle covers dot the north coast from Samos Town right up to the huge crescent of golden sand at lamatike Pige in the north-east. Sandy stretches reach to either side of Pythagorion in the south. Within easy easy reach of Samos Town, these beaches enjoy fine views across the Straits of Mykali to Turkey. The south-west coast around Kambos is an almost continuous strip of sandy bays, perhaps the best on the island.

Sportspeople Kokkari's smooth pebble beach is the best place to head for watersports.

Night Owls There are too many bars and clubs all over Samos.

Out & Abouters Birthplace of the godess Hera, Samos is rich in history. A ruined temple dating from the 7th century B.C. which bears her name was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It still stands in Pythagorion, the main focus of cultural interest here. Excavations have also unveiled an ancient acropolis and houses spanning many civilizations. The incredible Efpalinion aqueduct, built by the Romans to channel water the half-mile to Pythagorion is something to make a point of seeing. The pretty inland villages of Pirgos and Mavratzei seem to take you back in time. Further afield, a day trip to the legendary ruined city of Ephesus in Turkey is an absolute must. Dotted with monasteries, Samos is a delight to explore and a fine ring road makes most of the island easily accesssible by bus or car.

Winers & Diners Legend has it that the god Bacchus taught Samians to make wine and don't be too sceptical because the wines here are as good as they are varied. They are best accompanied with some fresh seafood and the tables which spill out onto the harbourfronts of Samos Town and Pythagorion are the best places to sample them. Samos Town, with its gleaming white houses and terracotta roofs is an informal and airy place. Pythagorion, the haunt of international millionaires, is sophisticated and can be pricey. The bustling young resort of Kokkari also has a lively al fresco scene in the main square. The south-west, around Kambos, tends to be quieter.

KARLOVASI

" The second largest town and harbour on Samos. All the ships that go to Samos stop first at Karlovasi. An island town, unique in plan, it is divided into five sections: Old, New and Middle Karlovasi, the Bay and the Harbour. Karlovasi was formerly the commercial and industrial capital of the island, and before the last war had grown rich on the leather trade. Today there are only a few light industries dedicated to ceramics, wall decorations and weaving. From Karlovasi you can make lovely excursions which include hiking, mountain climbing, and a visit to mountain villages and astonishing monasteries on Mt. Kerkis (1,433m), the highest mountain on Samos."
